What is prostate cancer?
After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men.
A cell is cancerous when it grows in an inappropriate location or manner. When the body's immune system can't control abnormal cell growth, it indicates the presence of cancer.
The prostate is a gland only found in men that helps produce semen. It's in front of the rectum and below the bladder. When cells inside of the prostate grow uncontrollably, that indicates prostate cancer.
Most of the time, someone with prostate cancer won't have any symptoms, making early screening vital. That's especially true for men with a family history of prostate problems or over age 50.
How is prostate cancer diagnosed?
Screening for prostate cancer includes a digital rectal exam. That involves Dr. Khanna inserting a gloved finger into your rectum to check the prostate's size, shape, and texture. If Dr. Khanna suspects a problem, he orders a blood test to detect levels of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA).
While it's normal to have some PSA in the bloodstream, high levels often indicate infection or cancer. If cancer is suspected, Dr. Khanna may order an ultrasound or a biopsy to check for abnormal cells.
How is prostate cancer treated?
Treatment for prostate cancer depends on how advanced the condition is.
