Laparoscopic Surgery Q&A
What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally-invasive approach to surgery that uses two or more small incisions instead of one large one. Because the approach is less invasive, many procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home the same day. The procedures use a special instrument called a laparoscope that has a tiny, built-in camera. Once inserted through one of the small incisions, the camera takes pictures inside your body and transmits them to a monitor where the doctor can view them. Any required surgical procedures are also performed through the small incisions using special instruments. Usually, a gas is used to gently expand the area so the camera can obtain clearer views of the site.
How is laparoscopic surgery used in urology?
Laparoscopic surgery is used in many types of urological treatments, including treatment of bladder and kidney problems and treatment of kidney, bladder and prostate cancers. Because it's minimally invasive, it's also an ideal technique for performing diagnostic procedures including biopsies.
What are the benefits of laparoscopic surgery?
The benefits of laparoscopic surgery are directly related to the small incisions used in the approach. Small incisions means far less risks for complications like infection compared to techniques that use larger, more “open” incisions, and because there's typically less bleeding and less tissue damage, healing is usually faster and there's usually less discomfort during the recovery period. Scarring is also minimized. Laparoscopy can also reduce the likelihood of erectile dysfunction that can occur following some types of surgery. Laparoscopic surgery can offer lots of benefits to patients, but it's not always the ideal choice. Dr. Khanna will perform a comprehensive physical exam and evaluation of your condition, including diagnostic imaging, to determine if a laparoscopic approach is the best approach for your needs.
